David Wheeler is a native from Pompano Beach, Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies with a minor in Psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 2001, and went on to become one of the inaugural graduates of the Florida International University College of Law in 2005
David’s career began as an intern with the State Attorney's Office, but his deep commitment to social justice led him to pivot towards defending the underdog. In 2005, he joined the Office of the Public Defender, where he quickly found his calling. Four months into his career, David began defending felony cases. In his career as an assistant public defender, he has chaired more than 100 felony jury trials, ranging from minor offenses to complex first-degree murder cases. David also served as the Felony Chief Assistant Public Defender, a role that allowed him to train and mentor new trial attorneys, ensuring they are equipped with the skills to think and argue effectively on their feet.
His reputation for providing zealous representation has earned him respect among peers and clients. He is the recipient of the “Against All Odds” Award by FACDL Miami, the “Harry Gulkin” Award and Century Award by the BACDL.
Beyond his work in the courtroom, David is deeply involved in his community. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Pompano Beach Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as a member of the Nuisance Abatement Board. He currently serves on the Pompano Beach Historical Society’s Board of Directors.
David is a member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association, NCDD, NACDL, FACDL, and BACDL.
